Do I Need To Buy Thermal Compound?

Well today I began putting together my new rig and saw that the Stock CPU fan for the i7 had like 3 patches on it. I was wondering if those are patches of thermal compound or do i need to apply some on myself?

  • Fed-up:

It is standard procedure for the cpu fan to have thermal compound already on it. There is normally a cover over the compound that must be removed before attaching the fan to the cpu.

  • You sound clueless. thermal compound is to help conduct heat from the chip, (or other hot surface) to the heat sink. It is placed where there is potentially an air gap (or less conductive layer).
I have no idea wtf you are babbling on about “patches”
Usually the good thermal compounds will improve the cheaper stuff used at the factory. But if you’re not overclocking, I wouldn’t bother. Since the risk of damaging the board or the chip isn’t worth it. IMHO.

Stock HSF always have thermal paste applied. Unless you plan on overclocking you will be good to go with the stock paste.
